We get this question all the time. The honest answer is: it depends. The biggest factor is how it was stored.
Film that spent years in a cool closet usually has a much better chance than film that sat in a hot garage or the trunk of a car. Just because a roll is old—or even expired—doesn’t necessarily mean the photos are gone.
If it’s a standard roll of film, it’s usually worth developing just to see what’s there.
Every now and then we see film formats that can’t be processed anymore because the equipment no longer exists, but most common film can still be developed. You might end up with faded colors or a little extra grain, or you might end up with a roll of memories that nobody has seen in years.
The truth is, you won’t know until it’s developed. Sometimes there’s nothing there. Sometimes the roll was already exposed. And sometimes it’s full of moments everyone forgot about.
